Kirkcudbright Accommodation

About Kirkcudbright area

We have labeled this as the Kirkcudbright guide, but our recommended accommodation takes in a wider area that includes the quaint coastal hamlet of Rockcliffe, the “Artist’s Town” of Kirkcudbright, the neat 1700s mill town of Gatehoue of Fleet, and the quiet village of Isle of Whithorn.

This is a sleepy corner of Scotland that doesn’t get the attention from tourists that it deserves. If you do venture here you will find a countryside guarded by some formidable fortresses that were on the frontline during the Scottish Wars of Independence. The region also has standing stones, ruined abbeys, whisky gardens, and the vast Galloway forest. This region can also lay claim to being the home of Christianity in Scotland.

Dumfries is the main town in the South West, but we have focused our recommended accommodation around Kirkcudbright as this is an exceptionally pretty little town at the mouth of the River Dee. It has gained the title of the “Artist’s Town” as it became something of a colony for artists in the late 1800’s and there was even a style of art known as the “Kirkcudbright School”.  The town still has an active arts community and lively calendar of cultural events.
