A visit to Islay is something of a pilgrimage for whisky enthusiasts. Whisky is such an integral part of the Islay experience that it is hard to imagine what this island would be like without it. The Whisky industry has helped to sustain the island community and its distinct identity. Whilst some Scottish islands have been heavily “Colonised” by incomers, on Islay it still feels like the locals are in the majority.


Islay can’t lay claim to being the most scenic of the Hebridean islands, but it does have some charming villages, wonderful beaches and an interesting history. Islay also has Machrie golf course, which is arguably one of the best golf courses on the west coast, but is little known due to its relative remoteness.
