Skyeskyns is the only traditional exhibition tannery in Scotland and is located on the Waternish peninsula of the Isle of Skye.
The visit to the workshop is extremely interesting, and the guides explain the tanning process with a lot of humour. They use traditional techniques and handcraft each skin to make the leather exceptionally smooth. They then comb the wool, using specialised machinery and a lot of elbow grease. The whole process takes two and a half weeks and ends up with wonderfully soft rugs.
After the workshop, visitors are taken to the showroom which displays a large array of sheepskins of variable sizes, colours and prices. The size and colour only depends on the breed of sheep, no artificial products are used. A range of accessories is available as well, including gloves, slippers or pet rugs.
Skyeskyns offers the perfect opportunity to combine sightseeing with a very tactile shopping experience to bring back home an unusual souvenir from Scotland.
You can get a taste for what's on offer at their very stylish website. It's just a pity that you can't get to touch the stuff online.
