Glenturret Distillery

Overview

Glenturret Distillery was known as The Famous Grouse Experience for several years (hence the large copper grouse statue that you see in some of our gallery of pictures). The distillery is now proudly going by the Glenturret name which was first established in 1875. Prior to 1875, the distillery was called "The Hosh" which doesn't sound like the best name for a premium malt whisky brand.

The distillery has a claim to the title of being the oldest in Scotland with some of the buildings dating from 1775, but it is known that illicit distilling took place here as long ago as 1717.

Although no longer known as The Famous Grouse Experience, there is still a connection with this famous brand of blended whisky and Glenturret malt is one of the key whiskies that go into the Famous Grouse Blend.

The Glenturret Tour is an immersive experience bringing to life the long history of whisky in the area and leading visitors through the processes and skills required to create The Glenturret single malt.

On arrival, the visitor is presented with a Glenturret branded gift and a £5.00 gift voucher to spend in The Glenturret shop which offers a wide choice of Single Malts and a selection of locally produced, handcrafted gifts. It is an attractive shop with friendly staff who were very patient with me whilst I sampled several different malts in order to find the perfect 90th birthday present for my Father who is quite an aficionado when it comes to his Malt whisky.

An attractive feature of the distillery is the old maltings store, with a characteristic pagoda roof, that has been refurbished as a café where you can get light lunches or coffee and cake.
