Stirling Accommodation

About Stirling area

Known as the “Gateway to the Highlands”, Stirling’s prominent role in Scottish history is a result of its location at a strategic crossing point on the River Forth. Control of Stirling Castle, and thus control of movement across Stirling Bridge, was critical for anyone wishing to invade the north. Hence the two pivotal battles that were fought here by William Wallace and Robert the Bruce.

In many ways, Stirling is like a miniature version of Edinburgh. The castle towers over the town and there is a mixture of 15th to 18th century buildings along the roads that lead down from the castle. The lack of a sea port prevented Stirling from developing beyond the status of a town, but it is still an interesting place to visit for the many historical sites in and around the town.

Our guide also recommends accommodation in the village of Callander which lies 15 miles to the west of Stirling. Callander is a good option for those that want a stopover in a scenic location on the edge of the Trossachs National Park.
