Whisky Tour 7 Day

Scottish Whisky Tour 7 day

Browse Scotland Tours 6 to 8 days

From Edinburgh, this whisky tour itinerary takes you north to Perthshire for a stopover near one of Scotland’s smallest distilleries. The route then travels via the haunted castles of Royal Deeside to the heart of the famous Speyside whisky region. Speyside has an abundance of distilleries, so we suggest a route to explore the area before visiting Inverness and the pretty villages of the Black Isle. On the return leg to Edinburgh, you drive past Loch Ness and then cut through the centre of the Highlands to spend a night in the Cairngorms National Park.

Day 1 – Starts with a visit of Edinburgh to enjoy the atmosphere of the Capital. We propose an introduction to Whisky by visiting the Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre. We also guide you to a great whisky shop and an exclusive bar where you’ll find a vast range of Malts to choose from.

The guide also includes some options for day trips around the area by car, bus or train.

Stopover in Edinburgh.

Day 2 – The tour heads north from Edinburgh and into Perthshire, where you can start your distillery visits. We provide 2 route options for the drive to Pitlochry:

Option 1: Heads west for a visit to historic Stirling Castle and the many Lochs of the Trossachs National Park, where you can take a trip on a Victorian Steam boat. After the Trossachs, you drive, via Loch Tay, to the charming Victorian village of Pitlochry. The route includes opportunities for tours at 3 different whisky distilleries.

Option 2: Takes a more direct route north that crosses over the Forth estuary into Fife. On the way to Pitlochry, we suggest detours to 2 pretty conservation villages where you can visit a country Palace or the ruins of a picturesque Cathedral. The day ends with opportunities for tours at 2 different whisky distilleries, including one of the smallest in Scotland.

Stopover in Pitlochry / Aberfeldy Area

Day 3 – You follow the path of an old military road towards the castle country of Royal Deeside. The whisky distillery option on today's route is a visit to the very picturesque distillery that Queen Victoria liked so much she gave it a “Royal Appointment”. This day also features an optional route for an extended drive along the path of the River Dee to visit some picturesque and well preserved Castles.

Stopover in Royal Deeside

Day 4 – After crossing the Cairngorms, you descend into the Spey Valley where you’ll never be too far from a whisky distillery. You may recognise some of the names along the route; Aberlour, Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Glen Grant, Macallan…
We provide details of how to book into some connoisseur whisky tasting tours where you will be able to sample a wider range of single malt "expressions".

Stopover in Moray Area

Day 5 – A short drive along the Moray Coast takes you from Elgin to Inverness, but you will find lots of places of interest to break the journey (e.g Culloden). If you still have time, you can squeeze in a visit to the distillery that makes the Scots’ favourite Malt. Alternatively, you might wish to join a dolphin spotting tour.

Stopover in Inverness / Black Isle Area

Day 6 – Head south via a choice of routes along the shores of Loch Ness to the village of Fort Augustus where you can see boats navigating the locks of the Caledonian Canal. You then travel through the Great Glen until you reach the start of the road that cuts west to east through the central Highlands on its way to the Cairngorm National Park. If you watched the TV show “Monarch of the Glen”, you will recognise some of this landscape. The day ends near the Rothiemurchus forest where there are lots of outdoor activities. Along the route, you have the opportunity to visit Scotland’s highest distillery.

Stopover in Cairngorms National Park

Day 7 – Heading South, we provide 2 sets of directions for the journey to Pitlochry. You can take a Direct route with suggestions for journey breaks, OR a more Scenic route that weaves past forests, pretty villages and castle ruins.
