Please find below a list of Frequently Asked Questions about Secret Scotland Tours.
Q. What do I get when I buy a Secret Scotland Itinerary & Accommodation Guide?
A. The easiest way to understand what you will get is to look at the Sample Scotland Tour Itinerary. In summary, we provide you with a complete package of information for planning your holiday. The itinerary contains route directions, travel times, recommendations on what to see, where to stay and the best places to eat. It also has lots of extra information and useful tips to help you plan your Scotland tour.
Q. How do I receive my Secret Scotland guide?
A. After payment (by PayPal / Credit Card) you instantly receive an automated email that gives you a link to download your guide up to 25 times during a 6 month period. The guide comes in the form of a PDF file (just like the Sample Scotland Tour) which you can:
- view on your Computer,
- Print off
- OR download to devices such as a Kindle or i-Pad.
Q. Does Secret Scotland book my Accommodation or Hire Car?
A. No, Secret Scotland provides detailed itineraries and recommended accommodation guides for touring holidays in Scotland. We supply you with all the information that you will need to find the best places in Scotland, but we do not book accommodation or make travel arrangements. However, if you buy an itinerary from us you will get a Promotional Code that lets you claim a 10% Discount on car hire with Arnold Clark Rental.
Q. Why doesn't Secret Scotland make bookings?
A. Quite simple because we provide you with all the links and information to book directly. The internet makes it so easy to book direct and it saves you money because you don't have to pay commission charges to a middle man.
Q. What Paperwork do I need to bring when collecting a Hire Car?
A. Overseas visitors must produce a valid domestic driving licence accompanied by a passport.
Q. How do I use the Tour?
A. Each tour is written in an easy to follow format of route directions that are punctuated by recommended attractions to visit or detour routes to consider. If you view the tour online, you can use the interactive features that allow you to view the Attraction Information sheets on the Secret Scotland website. When you go on holiday you simply print off the Tour and the information sheets for the attractions that you want to visit. See a Sample Tour.
Q. How do you calculate the travel time estimates in the Tours?
A. The travel time estimates are conservative calculations of the time that a tourist would take to drive on these roads. These roads can be driven quicker than the times indicated, but we have allowed for the difficulties of tourists unused to driving on the left, the problems of slow moving caravans and the “sight-seeing” factor. Please note that our travel times do not include time for stopping to visit attractions or to take photos. They are only estimates of driving time.
Q. Do I need to buy a Road Map?
A. It is always advisable that you use our guides in conjunction with a Road Map of Scotland. However, we have strived to make our route directions as clear and as accurate as possible and our guides include some simple maps.
Q. How do you select the Recommended Accommodation?
A. When we select accommodation we are looking for properties that offer the same high standards that we would want if we were to stay there on our holiday. We judge properties by their cleanliness, décor, value for money and the friendliness of the host. And whenever possible, we try to find properties that have some unique feature or special charm. Unlike other websites, we do not take advertising fees or commission. Consequently, Secret Scotland has the freedom to only feature the places that merit recommendation and our descriptions are unbiased.
Q. How do I make a booking with the Recommended Accommodation?
A. Secret Scotland provides you with all the necessary contact information for each of the B&B’s, guest houses, Inns etc. You contact them directly by email, telephone or post to make your reservations. See a sample B&B information sheet.
Q. How soon in advance should I make my accommodation reservations?
A. As soon as you possibly can. Scotland becomes very busy from June to September and for these months it is advisable to book well in advance. Edinburgh in August is crazy busy and needs to be booked even further in advance. The Isle of Skye is another busy place in Summer and should be booked early. B&Bs on Islands will usually give preference to stays of 2 nights or more, and may even decline one night stays unless booked late.
