Pollok Estate has been the home of the Maxwell family since the mid-13th century. The current house is an impressive 18th century mansion, filled with wonderful collections of Spanish art, antique furniture, silverware and ceramics, and an impressive library. A visit to Pollok House offers a snapshot of life in a country house, which still feels quite rural despite only being a few minutes away from the city centre of Glasgow.
A bonus for art lovers is the superb collection of paintings. Here you can see works by El Greco, Blake and Murillo, amongst others. If you visit at the weekend, the house is brought back to life by ‘staff’ and ‘family members’ who dress in period costume to welcome visitors.
The café, situated downstairs in the old kitchen with lots of copper pots and pans, is a recommended place for home baking and light snacks. You can visit the café without paying to enter the house.
