Military Tradition 8 Day

Military Tradition 8 Day

Scotland Tours >> Browse Scotland Tours >> Culture Tours >> 8 Day Military Tour

An exploration of the places and events that have shaped Scotland’s proud military tradition. You walk upon the battlefields where heavily outnumbered Scots triumphed over invading English armies and learn about the Highland culture of honour & loyalty that created some of the world’s finest fighting regiments. This tour is the same as the 7 Day Military, but with suggestions for an extra day of day trips to discover the castles in the countryside around Edinburgh.

Your Guide will be instantly available to you by email after credit card payment.

Day 1 – Starts with a visit of Edinburgh where the skyline is dominated by the Castle, which is still an active military barracks with armed sentries who aren’t just there for the benefit of tourists.

First night in Edinburgh.

Day 2 – A second day in the Capital, so that you can explore some more of its many historical castles and maybe visit the excellent National Museum of Scotland to learn about the country’s turbulent past. You are also given directions for day trips to discover the nearby villages, historical castles and Glenkinchie distillery.

Second night in Edinburgh.

Day 3 – Is a day for exploring Stirling with its distinctive castle, famous battlefields and the Wallace Monument which overlooks the site of his most celebrated victory. Detour options are provided for discovering the defensive stronghold of Clan Campbell and a well preserved 17th century village.

Third night in Edinburgh.

Day 4 – Head north to Perth and the Regimental museum of the famous Black Watch Regiment. From Perth, you follow a rural route past the crowning place of Scotland’s Kings and onto Pitlochry, where you can visit the dramatic castle that is home to Europe’s last private army.

Overnight in Pitlochry.

Day 5 – Drive along an old military road into the Deeside area, and visit the location of the 1715 Jacobite uprising. See some superb examples of the military bridges built to try to control the Highlands, and visit some of the splendid castles in Royal Deeside.

Stopover in Braemar or Ballater.

Day 6 – Starts with a drive north along a dramatic mountain pass defended by the lonely Corgarff Castle with its preserved military barracks. The route then heads towards Culloden, site where the 1745 Jacobite rebellion was savagely crushed. You may then wish to follow our directions to the impressive fortress that was built as a stronghold against future Jacobite uprisings.

Stopover in Inverness or the Black Isle.

Day 7 – Drive westwards, via Loch Ness, to the place where the 1745 Jacobite rebellion began. You can then choose to take alternative routes for the journey south depending on whether you wish to go by quiet roads or via the busy town of Fort William.

Stopover in Oban area.

Day 8 – The return leg to Edinburgh via Rob Roy country and a famous whisky distillery near Crieff.
