TESTIMONIALS

"Over 100 pages with hundreds of links. It's an entire guide book! I truly am without words. I was expecting maybe 5-6 pages for each week. I have to say that I feel very, very guilty at the small amount we paid for the wealth of information you provided."

"I am delighted with my purchase of your Scenic Scotland 7 days tour, wish that I had found your website sooner. I would have saved many hours of uneducated web surfing and comparisons."

Dr. Jacinta Meharchand, Toronto, Canada.

"The Tours look great...Your site was the best all round site I found during my search."

MacLellan's Castle is situated right at the heart of Kirkcudbright and you will have no problems finding it.

MacLellan's Castle is different from the nearby Threave and Cardoness Castles because it was not required to be defensive. Consequently the layout of the castle has more emphasis upon the kitchen facilities and grand rooms for entertaining guests.

You will need to use your imagination to recreate the appearance of the upper floors of the castle. The ground floor rooms are more complete, with vaulted chambers, a  kitchen and dark corridors. The kitchen is made more interesting by the inclusion of chickens roasting on a spit and tables of convincing-looking plastic food. There are also some human figures in the kitchen and they look quite "Ghostly" as they are totally white.

An interesting feature of the castle is the "Laird's Lug", a small room where the Laird could overhear conversations in the main hall next door. Be sure to have a look in the main hall to try to figure out where the listening hole is!

Unfortunately, you cannot climb higher than the first floor of the castle so you will not be able to get elevated views across Kirkcudbright. There is a staircase to higher levels, but it was not safe for visitors to use during our visit.

This is an attraction that we would suggest visiting if you have an Explorer Pass. There are some information boards in the castle, but it is mainly a ruin so there is only so much to be seen for your £3.50.

Save money on visiting this attraction by buying an Explorer Pass
