The Georgian House dates from 1796 when Edinburgh’s well-to-do left the cramped, squalid conditions of the Old Town to settle in the fashionable New Town. The first owner, John Lamont, 18th Chief of the Clan Lamont, lived here with his family until 1815 and the house’s exquisite collections of china, silver, paintings and furniture all reflect the domestic life and social and economic context of the times.
The tour of the house starts in the basement where an Audio Visual displays gives an introduction to the history of the house and its Georgian inhabitants. You then visit the kitchen and the grander rooms on the floors above. The rooms have all been faithfully restored with period colour schemes and furnishings however, there are only 5 rooms open to the public.
If you have bought an NTS “Discovery Ticket” then it is worth a visit, otherwise you may feel that £5 is a bit expensive for just 5 rooms. If you enjoy this then also consider “Gladstone’s Land” on The Royal Mile.
