Castle Fraser with its towering granite walls rising up to turreted battlements is arguably the most imposing looking castle on the Grampian Castle Trail.
Castle Fraser is an excellent place to visit as there is a large number of rooms to view and the castle has interesting features and is very attractive inside.
A tour through the castle takes you through several periods in history from the medieval Great Hall to the comfortable Victorian bedrooms. You should allow 45 - 60 minutes for the tour of the castle.
Interesting things to look out for are the Laird’s Lug in a corner of the "Worked Room". The Laird's Lug is a small room hidden above the Great Hall where the Laird could listen in to the conversations of his visitors. And when you visit the "Bailiff's Room" you need to search for the spy hole that looks down on the Great Hall. There is also a grim room full of stuffed animal heads and in the Library you can see the wooden leg that Colonel Charles Fraser wore after an injury in the 1812 Peninsular War.
The gardens have undergone major redevelopment work to return them to the style and appearance that they would have had during the 18th-century.
