Built in the 15th century by one of Scotland's most powerful families, the Crichtons, Blackness Castle was never destined to be a peaceful residence. Its main roles were those of a garrisoned fortress and a state prison for holding foreign prisoners of war.
It’s a very striking building well worth a visit, with its many chambers in 2 towers. You can go to the top of the towers to get panoramic views over the Firth of Forth and the Forth Rail Bridge. The jetty also has a telescope for taking a closer look at Fife on the other side of the Forth.
Interestingly, many of the scenes from Mel Gibson’s version of “Hamlet” were filmed here.
